HEARTS BABY BLANKET
This project
was shared by a friend recently, and of course, I knew this was on my “to-do”
list.. just didn’t know I’d get to make it so soon
“The stork” is
visiting a family member .. and yet again Providence strikes ..
guess who is going to be filled with love wrapped in a blanket ;)

Instructions : (Using U.S terminology)
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement or project size measurement. This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

I wanted to use this pattern to make
a blanket, so here are my notes, with the permission of Fiona who has designed
the wonderful shawl above.
Foundation double crochet (fdc) : This is a unique way of starting a project directly with a row of double crochet stitches. Here is an easy video tutorial https://youtu.be/hjNUYVvyU9k
Start with fdc in multiples of 7 for the length of
the blanket you are making. Turn.
Note : Right at the
start there’s a calculation complication.
Our pattern should not only have
multiples of 7 but have an odd number of sets of 7. This means that
you should have either (7 x 3 = 21 fdc) or (7 x 5 = 53 fdc) or (7 x 7= 49 fdc)
; not (7 x 4 = 28 fdc) or
(7 x 6 = 42 fdc) etc for our start row.
Row
1 : dc in the 1st 7 dc ;
*ch 3, sk next 3 dc, sc in the next
dc ;
ch 3, dc in the next 7 dc* ;
rep *to* till the end. Turn.
In the following row, we will work a ch-3 picot,
which is (ch 3, sl-st in the 3rd ch from hk).
How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook). For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).

In this case, we will work our picot in the
middle of a ch-5 sp. So here’s how we
will work the picot. We will work ch 2,
then the picot (so another 3 ch), and finally another 2 chain. This will mean then that our picot is bang in
the middle of this chain space.
Row
2 : dc in the 1st 7 dc ;
*(ch 2 + picot + ch 2 and sk next two
ch-3 sps and sc, dc in the next 7 dc)* ;
rep *to* till the end. Turn.
Row
3 : dc in the 1st dc ;
*ch 3, sk next 2 dc, sc in the next
dc ; ch 3, sk next 2 dc, dc in the next dc ;
(2 dc in the next ch-2 sp ; dc in the
next picot ; 2 dc in the next ch-2 sp) ;
dc in the next dc* ;
rep *to* till the end. Turn.
Row
4 : dc in the 1st dc ;
*(ch 2 + picot + ch 2 and sk next two
ch-3 sps and sc, dc in the next 7 dc)* ;
rep *to* till the end. Turn.
Our pattern repeat rows are Rows 1 –
4. Rep these rows till you have the
dimensions needed for your blanket.
Border Ideas :
Remember if you are adding
the small border, then that will add to the final dimensions as well.
After you complete the hearts part of
the blanket, work a row of sc or dc all around, with 3 sts in each corner. When working along the vertical bar of your
project, remember that you work 2 sts per vertical dc and also count how many
stitches you are working along one side, so that you can keep the same number
for the other side as well.
For the border, I’ve used this shell
pattern from http://www.mypicot.com/0058.html
The only difference is in the start pattern stitch count.
The pattern sheet says start with 8 +
4, but that is if you are working in rows.
We
are working in a round, so our stitch count will be in multiples of 8
Please visit the pattern sheet for
the border.
The pattern says : Turn at the end of every row and we do turn at the end of every round as well to get the pattern even
though we are working in rounds. So
besides the change of stitch count, please follow pattern
sheet all the way.
