If you’ve been following my blog, you’ll know
that I’ve made this pattern before as a window valance. You will also know that I do not really like
to repeat patterns, so as I’m working on this one, there *must* be something
different about it. This has been made for a friend who wanted individual flowers hanging off stems that she plans to use as a curtain. As we are presently enjoying Ganesh Chaturthi (the festival of our Indian elephant headed God), she has decided to decorate her room this way.

Materials used : Today I’ve
used up a lot of my stash of 4 ply acrylic with a 3.5 mm crochet hook

Abbreviations used :
lp(s) : Loop(s) sc : Single crochet
dc : Double crochet sp : Space
sl-st : Slip stitch ch : Chain

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement. This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

As these are individual flowers hanging off a
stem, I thought I’d change the last round a little bit to accentuate the flower
and also to add a little weight to the free hanging floral stems.
So after you finish Round 5 (from the original pattern link), come back here to
see what we’re doing with Round 6 as well as attaching the stem.
For the last round of our flower, I thought I’d
accentuate it with another color change and a spike stitch.
A spike stitch or a long single crochet stitch
is just a single crochet that you work one row below the row that you’re
working on. This then becomes a longer
single crochet stitch, and in our case, helps define the edge of the flower
petal.
When done in a nice contrast coloured yarn, the
petal edge is shown off nicely and it, I thought, added a neat edging to our
already beautiful flower.

Round 6 :
(With new colour) :
sc in the 1st 7 dc ;
*spike stitch
in the sc of Round 5 ;
sc in the next 7 dc* ;
rep *to* all around,
ending with
a spike stitch in the last sc.
Join with
a sl-st to the 1st st.
I’ve decided to make these individual hanging
flowers with a long stem, so before I fastened off the last colour, I’ve added
my green yarn for the stem.
I’ve worked a little leaf every few stitches
along the long stem and did all this in one continuous movement.
How to make a little leaf : (With green) :
I’ve worked a row of chain and then worked back on that chain to make a
leaf.
The leaf is worked over 3 ch.
I worked 2 trc or triple crochet in the 3rd
ch from hk ;
1 dc in the same 3rd ch from hk, and finally an sc in
that same 3rd ch from hk.
This makes a total of 4 sts all in the 3rd
ch from hk (2 trc + 1 dc + 1 sc).
It does not matter where you decide to
make your little leaves – the pattern for the leaves is the same all the
time.
Once you work the last sc, the
leaf sticks out on one side, and you are free to continue working the chain and
building the stem upwards for the next leaf.
Below is an idea of how to go about
making the stem.
Remember that you could (or rather should)
increase / decrease the number of chain between leaves to make each stem look
different.
I’d suggest that you work one stem with the
numbers given below, just so you can get an idea of what I mean.. and then you
go off your merry way and create your own stems.
Stem : (With green) :
ch 20 ;
*work in a leaf ;
ch 15* ;
rep *to* till the length of stem needed.
As each of these stems need to be hung off a rod
of some sort, ensure that you measure that rod, and make a loop at the end of
your stem, so that the stem can be easily strung on.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
