TWO OH, SO CUTE HEADBANDS
I made a dress for a 5-yr old and thought that
it just deserved something more. I found
a pattern for this flower, and thought it would look superb either on the top
of the dress (yoke) or as an embellishment for the headband. So off I went with hook n yarn.. and here’s
what I’ve created.

How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook). For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
So before we set off on our new creative
journey, let’s take a quick look at what we’re creating here today.
I’m going to make a few motifs that can be
easily attached on either to a headband (as in my case) or the yoke of a dress
(also can be used in my case J) or maybe the brim of a cap.

Headband # 1
For the first one,
I’ve used is this freebie from
Just a few notes (especially for Indians due to
our varied yarn availability)
With our Indian Oswal 4-ply acrylic yarn and a 4
mm crochet hook, the pattern requirement of 45 ch was insufficient, so I made a
few tweaks.
1. I
started with fsc, as I always feel that this start ensures more stretch in any
yarn.
2. I
started with about 70 fsc, which was sufficient for the round head
circumference of the child I’m making this head band for.
3. This
is a super easy pattern, and it really does not matter how many stitches you
start with, so may I suggest that if you’re using a yarn other than that
specified in the pattern page, go ahead and just check head circumference(s)
and make as many fsc as needed
4. May
I yet again suggest that you start with fsc as this really does make
your project look better and does give it that little extra stretch that one
needs on head bands.
5. I’ve
decided to use two colours (to match the dress that this head band is going
along with), so I’ve just gone ahead and worked the split sc in whichever
colour suits me (or whichever I had left .. hahahah)
6. The
only other difference that I’ve made is that I did not end with a sl-st
at the end of each round, but continued to work in spirals – so there is no
join line. So, on that last round (when you’re finishing off), work sl-st into
several of the last few stitches to ease that end row and neatly weave in the
yarn there too for a seamless-look and finish.
Headband # 2
For the second one,
I was inspired by this pin
https://in.pinterest.com/pin/470063279839303937/ for a really cute
twisted headband.
For this headband, I’ve worked just
slightly under 2-times the circumference of the head (as I’m using an acrylic
yarn with loads of stretch).
I worked half the width needed as we twist our headband and
attach two sides, thus doubling the width.
I am making this to match this
off-white and pink dress I’ve made for a little girl, so am going to
interchange these two colors on my headband as well.
If working two rows per color, you
just work the row back and forth and attach colors at the end of two rows.
I started with Color 1 (off-white, in my case) and then changed to Color 2 (pink, in my case).
At the top of this blog, I’ve given
you links on how to change colors seamlessly.
So there are three methods to work
this change, if you decide to work one row each in one color.
1. Carry your yarn
along (Check the top of the blog for a link on “how to”)
2. Work one color,
fasten off at the end of the row, and re-attach as needed
3. Work Color 1, and at
the end of the row, attach Color 2. At
the end of Row 2, your Color 2 yarn will be at the left hand side of your work.
Pull up a long loop and leave Color 2 yarn at the left hand
end. Come back to the right hand side of your work, where
you have left Color 1 yarn. Hook into Color 1 yarn and work Row 3 with this
yarn from right to left. On the last
stitch, hook into Color 2 yarn and bring that yarn up to the top. Now you have both your colors on the left hand side. Turn and work Color 1 yarn all the way to
the end of the row and repeat what we have just done.
FLOWER MOTIF # 1
You can work the whole flower in one colour, or
decide to change colours around. Rather than confuse you and dilute your
creativity, I’m going to write just the pattern, and you can go creative-crazy
with the colours.
Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and 16 dc in that
circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st dc. Pull lightly to close the magic circle.
Round 2 : sc in the 1st dc ; *ch 3, sk next
dc, sc in the next dc* ;
rep *to* all around and join with a sl-st to the
1st sc.
Round 3 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ;
[sc , hdc
; 3 dc ; hdc ; sc ]all in the same ch-3 sp ;
rep [to] in all ch-3 sps around and join with a
sl-st to the 1st sc.
Tip : I feel that the petals of
our lovely flower will stand out better if we ensure that the sc we work in
between the petals is night and tight.
That said, see what works best for you.
Round 4 : sc in the 1st sc ; *ch 5, sk the
next 7 sts and sc in the next sc* ;
Rep *to* all around and join with a sl-st to the
1st st.
Round 5 : sl-st into the 1st ch-5 sp ;
[sc , hdc
; 2 dc ; 3 trc ; 2 dc ; hdc ; sc ]all in the same ch-5 sp ;
rep [to] in all ch-5 sps around and join with a
sl-st to the 1st sc.
Round 6 : sc in the 1st sc ; *ch 7, sk the
next 11 sts and sc in the next sc* ;
Rep *to* all around and join with a sl-st to the
1st st.
Round 7 : sl-st into the 1st ch-7 sp ;
[sc , hdc
; 2 dc ; 5 trc ; 2 dc ; hdc ; sc ]all in the same ch-7 sp ;
rep [to] in all ch-7 sps around and join with a
sl-st to the 1st sc.
FLOWER MOTIF # 2
Yet again I’ll repeat that you can work the
whole flower in one colour or in more than one, and yet again, I am not going
to indicate change of colours.
Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and 10 hdc in that
circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 2 : sc in the 1st hdc ; *ch 2, sk next
hdc, sc in the next hdc* ;
rep *to* all around and join with a sl-st to the
1st st.
Round 3 : sc in the 1st sc ;
*ch 2, dc 3-tog in the next ch-2 sp ; ch 2, sc
in the next sc* ;
rep *to* all around and join with a sl-st to the
1st st.
Round 4 : sc in the 1st sc ;
*ch 5, sk dc 3-tog, sc in the next sc* ;
rep *to* all around and join with a sl-st to the
1st st.
Round 5 : sl-st in the 1st ch-5 sp ;
(sc, hdc, 5 dc , hdc, sc) all in the same
ch-5 sp ;
*sk next sc ; rep (to) all in the next ch-5 sp
rep *to* all around and join with a sl-st to the
1st st.
Fasten off and weave in ends.. and Voila !
Aren’t
these just beautiful – and you can use the flowers in so many ways! :)
I used a
lovely flower-shaped button I found that matched my yarns exactly, but I should
also share a new idea I had for the button. I had these lovely little pink
beads that I’d already used on that final row, and thought they’d look lovely
as a button. So first I took a regular shirt /pant button and covered it with a
little fabric. I then sewed in the beads
onto that little fabric top. The base of
the button was easy to attach on, as there is the fabric to hold on to.. and I
think the end result is pretty amazing.. what do you think?
